My statement - Mayo

For me Open Design means making design accessible. Everybody is able to execute their design without limitations. This way a product can be personalized, which is important to prevent excessive overproduction and waste. More ‘’designers’’ will think about a product, as a result it will be developed continually. When someone chooses a product he will first look for improvements and then start with making an adapted version. A relation between products and their owners occurs for the owner spent time making it. I think, as a designer focused on the future, it is impossible to ignore Open Design.

If I would have a fablab in my own studio, I would take every opportunity to use it. In this class I have seen that the possibilities are endless. My fablab would be open for everyone because I think it is inspiring and educational to see what other people are doing.
My strategy with Open Design is investigating what people have done before me, so that I wont make the same mistakes. I want my signature to be visible in designs inspired by mine, even though I know that might not be realistic to think. Most probably my designs will be used as a guideline, at least that’s what I would do.

Statement - Flores

Voor ons project voor Open Design hebben wij een gepersonaliseerde lamp ontworpen die de identiteit van de ontwerper communiceert met licht. Hierdoor kunnen ontwerpers / amateurs een dialoog voeren in licht. Met Typografie patronen en andere vormen kan de ontwerper zijn eigen ‘Hydron’ ontwerpen. Ons uitgangspunt was om een object te maken die interactief is door middel van licht en de kijker uitnodigt om er zelf ook één te ontwerpen.

Als ik zelf een Fablab zou bezitten zou ik persoonlijk meer op zoek gaan naar materialen die niet vaak toegepast worden, om zo tot uniekere en originele ontwerpen te komen. Ik denk ook dat een Fablab mijn horizon zou kunnen verbreden in mijn ontwerper schap, in de zin van uitwerkingen en mogelijkheden van het ontwerp. Ik zou de technieken uitdiepen en kijken wat er nou allemaal mogelijk is.

Onze strategie was gebaseerd op interactie en communicatie in een nieuwe vorm, in dit geval licht. Het ontwerp zou kijkers uit moeten nodigen om zelf de taak over te nemen als ontwerper en contact te maken met andere ontwerpers / amateurs. Hiermee breng je den mensen samen en ontstaat er een onverwacht dialoog in een lichtspel.

Personal Lamp - Laura

We all created a personal lamp which tells something about us. I bought plain white card which I then decorated with watercolours and glitter. I combined words and pattern, choosing the words: Laugh, Love, Dream, Explore, Smile and Live; which I think are important. I also added patterns that I like.

My statement

Before starting this subject I’d never really hard of Open Design before, let alone knowing what it involved. I normally worked on projects alone, so working together in a group and combining ideas was an interesting experience. Open Design is an alternative method for designing and developing, by working together through publically sharing design information. You combine each other’s strengths and sources.

If I had a Fablab in the future I think I’d be a lot more experimental within my work, as I’d have much more equipment, which I would be able to easily make use of. I’d especially want to make use of 3-D printing, seeing if I could come up with new creative solutions. I’d also make more use of collaboration, working together with people to come up with new exciting ideas, combining our strengths and ideas. When I visited the Fablab in Amsterdam it seemed like a really inspiring workplace to be, where you can come together. I think almost any idea in a Fablab would be possible, as there are so many different tools which can be made us of.

Our open design strategy was to be inspired by a few pieces of design and create something new. We wanted the lamp to express something, and perhaps even result in a discussion between people. The user gets to fully participate in our design, as it’s fully customizable to their personal taste and vision. They can decide what material they want to use for their lamp and what size it will be, and whether they will have more than one. The design of the lamp itself will be their own choice, so that they can show or say what they want about themselves. Each of us have created our own personal lamp which shows something about ourselves. We expect that each user will create a very different and personal lamp, and hopefully create some surprising and unexpected outcomes, which we ourselves did not think of.

We’ve decided we are going to use LED lights in our lamp, as this means that the lamp won’t need to be plugged in (as the fairy lights would need to be). We will use several different coloured LED lights so we can get an effect similar to that of the fairy lights. Photos of the lamp with LED lights will follow soon.

Update

We’ve created a logo for our product. The logo was spray painted from the cut out card left over after laser-cutting our lamp net. We decided to keep the logo simple and bold, so that it catches your eye and is recognisable. We plan to make our final lamp mock-up black, so we matched this to the colour of the logo.

The blueprint needs to be adjusted slightly still, when we use 2mm card the shape no longer fits properly. We also need to adjust the engraving lines. A new version will be drawn and uploaded ASAP.

Things we still need to think about

1. What will we do with the left over letters/shapes?

2. How do we make the lamp hang? With a hook? Will be have more than one lamp?

3. Will we have more than one lamp hanging?

4. Will our lamp also work in a room with existing lighting?

5. If we use fairy lights, what will we do with the existing wires?

Tutorial of how to re-create our lamp

1. Download the blue print from this blog
2. Adjust the design to your own needs and wishes. Add your own patterns or words.
3. Test the lasercutter to find the correct setting needed for 2mm cardboard. It will different for different lasercutters. We used power 100, Speed 3 and PPI/Hz 1000.
4. Cut out the net on the cardboard using the lasercutter
5. Save the letters - you can do something with those
6. Assemble the net (without glue) and fold all fold lines
7. Glue the net together - we found that wood glue worked well
8. When the net is dry, insert the fairylights carefully.
9. Find a dark place so that you can experiment with the light.

Motivation of why we hacked this design

We decided to hack the Teardrop Pendant Light. We liked that the lamp produced shadows on the walls, which was the aspect which we chose to integrate into our design. We wanted the user to be able to directly interact with our lamp, and to be able to create their own design on it and put together the lamp themselves.

Our idea

The idea behind our lamp was that the user is given a template of the lamp shape, which they can then customise themselves with their own cut out design, so that they are able to communicate who they are.

We used a simple material like cardboard so that the user is able to assemble the lamp themselves.

What we learned & discovered

We tested different lamps and found that using fairy lights created a very abstract and less literal result, which we thought worked well.

The main thing that we learned was how to use a laser cutter, as none of us had ever used it before.

We also learned that you need to adapt the design to the thickness of the material you use, because otherwise the shape doesn’t assemble properly.
